Rory is from the remote village of Gwayi (Kingcome Inlet), he is of Kwa kwa Ka Wakw Nation descent (Musgamawg Dzawada enuwx tribe)“I was deeply immersed in my cultural heritage at an early age; I have witnessed and observed many fine artists at work. Being a parent and representing my ancestral heritage with respect and dignity, by been drug and alcohol free is very important to me.It is important for us artists to learn and remember the stories, teachings, songs, and dances, and to honour our ancestors by passing them onto our children.” Rory was very instrumental in forming the, 'Kwa Kwa ka Wakw Urban Dance Group' in 1993 which is still in existence today. They share songs and dances to educate people about the Kwa kwa k’a wakw Nation’s world view, history and culture. They have shared at schools, conferences, graduations, festivals, and feasts.“We have been blessed and privileged to share and celebrate our spirituality through song and dance at numerous events such as Elders conferences, education conferences, youth conferences, graduations, Yoreme Festival in Mexico.” Making his residence in North Vancouver, and striving to enhance his training by studying the Kwa kwa k’a wakw designs, He is a determined artist working in the medium of hand engraving using both gold and silver. |
